On Dec 21/06, ten HOG riders, some
with passengers, left Bobby's Territorial
Harley Davidson at 1100 for a ride to the BLM Painted Rock Petroglyph
site East
of Yuma. A fuel stop at Dateland, then an exit at mile 102 heading north
to the
site approximately 10 miles in on the paved two lane road. This road
eventually
terminates at the site of the Gila River Dam.
A short stretch of gravel in to the parking area and we were there at
1300 just
in time to see what we came to see. The petroglyph site is a mound
approximately 26 ft high made up of a jumble of boulders that have been
carved
by ancients who are lost in antiquity.
What is extraordinary about this site is that the ancients tracked the
path of
the sun to determine the day of the winter and summer solstice. (the
shortest
and longest days of the year) This resulted in carvings in a grotto that
indicates the progression of the days. On the day of the solstice, a
shaft of
light enters the grotto from the West and advances towards an etched
stylized
image of a humanoid that is standing to one side of a stylized sun
symbol. As
the shaft of light progresses it pierces the head of the humanoid and
continues
towards the sun image. The solstice day is determined when the shaft of
light
enters the sun. Days either side of the solstice and the shaft of light
is
above or below the circumference of the sun. On this day, the 21st of
December,
it pierced the sun's perimeter. When we arrived at 1300 the sun was
entering
the grotto. Around 1330 it was approaching the humanoid and by 1345 it
had
pierced the sun.
There were 20 or more other observers, some photographing the phenomenon
for
most of the day. For others, it was an annual event. One fellow in his
50's had
been coming ever since he was first introduced to it when he was 17.
Evidently, there are very few such sites in North America, so we are
fortunate
that we may witness this unusual time machine so close to home. By 1400,
we
were on the road heading back to Yuma and a dinner ride. A nice ride in
nice
weather. fun stuff..
